Endangered Animal of the Month-May 2012
Name: Bengal Tiger
Inhabits: It is found wild in the Indian subcontinent.
Why it is endangered: It is poached by humans for many reasons, including for the pelt and for the sport of it. There are less than 3,000 Bengal tigers left in the wild.
Appearance: The Bengal tiger's coat is light orange, with stripes ranging from dark brown to black. The belly and the interior parts of the limbs is white, and the tail is white with black rings.
Fun Facts: It's the largest existing cat in the feline family. It can consume over 40kg of meat in one sitting. It loves swimming.

Name: Riverine Rabbit
Inhabits: It is found wild only in the central and southern regions of the Karoo Desert in South Africa.
Why it is endangered: It has lost most of it's habitat to farming and development
Appearance: It has a black stripe running from the corner of the mouth and across the cheek to the bottom of the ear. It has cream-colored fur on its belly and throat. Its tail is pale brown with a tinge of black toward the tip.
Fun Facts: It's nocturnal. It is one of the most critically endangered mammals in the world.

Inhabits: Northern Atlantic waters (such as Ireland)
Why it is endangered: It is endangered because of hunting, ship strikes and entanglement in fishing gear.
Appearance: It has a stocky black body with callosities on the head region.
Fun Facts: Northern Right Whales can weigh up to 70 tons. They also have no dorsal fin. Northern Right Whales can live up to 50 years in the wild, but in captivity they can live up to 100 years.

Red wolves are named for their cinnamon red fur which has a little brown. Fun Facts: There are only about 100 red wolves left in the wild. Red wolves can also be gray or black. |

Inhabits: The North Atlantic Waters and Cap Blanc
Why it is endangered: It is endangered because of hunting, pollution and disturbance by humans.
Appearance: The Mediterranean monk seal has dark brown to black fur with a pale belly and a short, broad and flat snout.
Fun Facts: The Mediterranean monk seal eats fish, mollusks, octopus and squid. It hunts in the day and sleeps at night.

Inhabits: Eastern Europe
Why it is endangered: The European Mink is endangered because of hunting, habitat loss, water pollution and fur farming.
Appearance: The European Mink have slender, flexible bodies, big bushy tails and webbed feet or paws. They have a light summer coat and a darker and thicker winter coat. The European Mink in the wild has dark brown to black fur.
Fun Facts: The European Mink’s diet includes small mammals, frogs, mollusks, crabs, fish and insects. The European Mink matures at 10 months old.

AXOLOTL
An axolotl is an animal that eats small invertebrates and lives in Lake Xochimilco, Mexico. It breeds in the spring and in the fall; the female lays up to 500 eggs, depositing them on the bottom of the lake.
The word "Axolotl" comes from the Nauhatl language, an indigenous language to Mexico, spoken by the Aztecs. It comes from the roots atl, meaning water, and xolotl, meaning servant, or doll.
